Hi All,

Okay i am a newbie... I have heard people making their own concoctions for danish oil, and other finishes to get what the finish that they are happy with.

My question is: Has anyone when making their own DO concoction, tried putting shellac flakes in?
I have never used Shellac flakes before and have only ever used estapol, but want something better. so I don't know anything shellac, and I hope this isn't a stupid question.
If this is a bad idea, why??
if anybody thinks it might be a good idea, why??

Thanks

Greg.

Cos if it worked the wise one would have done it.
Shellac dissolves in alcohol and I am guessing that in oil it would just become a large, expensive, viscous blob.
All to do with reactive processes.
C'mon Neil, I know it won't work but not sure exactly why.

It is not for the likes of you to question the wisdom of 'U' (all praise and honor be his)
You have been honoured above all men to have heard the word of 'U' (all praise and honor be his)

Hi DaveInOz
I don't think that Greg_stewey was questioning U's wisdom, he just wanted to know the science behind the wisdom. :)

Shellac flakes won't mix with oil because they're not compatible!!! You can however use premixed shellac with oil but the addition of the oil in this instance basically serves to stop the shellac from working and vice versa. Stick with the poly or if you can get it use spa varnish (the old fashioned oil based varnish)

Cheers - Neil :)

PS Dave you really are a suck.............. Well done.:D

Expect the great one meant spar varnish ;)

Has anyone used this? Someone reckoned that it prevented the UV from changing the colour of timber to some extent.

Thanks for your explaination. We ask because you guys have the knowledge gained by your failures and successes. We just don't want to fall into the same traps.
