watching Ben Elton Live from Planet Earth.

What a load of crap.

I am not a prude but if this is the state of comedy now then I can understand why the younger generation have no sense of humour.

Give me the 2 Ronnies or Dave Allen any day.

Your owning up to watching it. The ads for it were enough to tell me not to watch it.

Yeah give me Dave Allen any day.

I'm with the rest of the old farts here :D

Also give me Love Thy Neighbour, Yes Minister, One Foot in the Grave, Dad's Army, Steptoe and Son, The Good Life, Are You Being Served?, Blackadder, Blackadder Goes Forth, Faulty Towers, The Goodies, Men Behaving Badly, Open All Hours, The Young Ones and Birds of a Feather, Robins Nest and whatever else I can't remember right now.

They were comedy, not canned laughter, not ... I must be a belligerent old fart when you had to get off the lounge to turn the tv channel, when people knew what comedy was, when... :U

Hi ,
One thing is for certain - it won't last. It is not funny, it is not comedy. It is crass and was given short shrift here.

I saw about 30 seconds of it while changing channels, if the rest was as bad as that it will be gone real soon.

It seems it lost half its audience in an hour.

This thread reminds me of another old farts thread about " you know you are getting old when ..." :-)

I have not seen the show you mention but he's a funny guy and a really good author too. I read Blind Faith some time ago and really weird and interesting read.

I think you guys are showing your age again.

Don't try and go and see Will Anderson :-)

They should have put it on channel 10! I am interested to go and find it on Internet now to see what you guys are talking about - the preview was pretty funny.

Oh Jesus I have just read the reviews - damn it ben what have you done!

it looks like not even the younger generation were interested. I am a huge ben Elton fan and I think I don't want to watch it after the reviews I have read!

Didn't see this latest show though!

If he wrote it, then like every dog - they have their day.

Never been a fan of him personally, nor a lot of comedians that are around at the moment, one that comes to mind is Adam Hill who has his own show on Ch 2. Hopefully he gets booted and something worthwhile get put on in place of... but I'm an old fart. :U

Jim,
Interesting fellow is Ben Elton...I quite liked his work on Blackadder and The Young Ones...and it seems, so do people who may not know that he wrote them:doh:
I cannot stand his stand up work or his political posturing, and PC reaction to the likes of Benny Hill. It seems to me he wanted to impose the current (his) comedy idiom onto historical material that was a reflection of the times.
There isn't a chance I will watch his current stuff....and wild horses couldn't drag me along to see a rock opera based on the rock band Queen...horrid nostalgic glam rock crapola music...just like the original stuff they produced. That stuff was fodder for the bogan classes.

Regards,
Peter.

well I think most comedy nowdays relies on swearing and such. While I can utter the odd word or 6 I reckon it just means you can't do comedy. The older stle like Dave allen the 2 ronnies open all hrs young ones black adder et al didn't rely on profanities to make you laugh. :2tsup:
The modern way makes them sound like grade1 kids behind the school shed impressing their peers with a new word.
Oh well must be old fart sydrome before my time:o

I didn't see the show last night so cant comment on it.
I have seen Ben Elton live in the UK in 1991 and he was very funny then.
We Will Rock you was very good. It was fun as a rock musical should be.
Sorry I must be a bogan but then I also like opera. Lots of bogans there as well.

Adam Hills is a far better 'light' TV show host than stand-up comedian. He sure ain't good at the latter but I enjoyed his new show 'In Gordon Street, Tonight' and will watch again - and I'm an 'Old Fart' too!

Worst part with Ben Elton is, he led the campaign to get rid of Benny Hill because of his out dated smutty comedy, yet the stuff he served up the other night made Benny Hill look like a comic genius.

Have to agree with the state of some newer comedians - they seem to think that the only way to tell a joke is to make it smutty or to include as much swearing as possible. Paul McDermott comes to mind..

Here's a clip to make us all feel better :D

One Ronnie and a bunch of computer gags. Nice and modern, clean humor, no swearing and I thought funny as heck :2tsup:

Didn't Ben Elton write the Young Ones? Either way, his only decent work was when he co-wrote with Richard Curtis. Yet strangely, Curtis writes well on his own - I suspect that that does indicate something. As for Elton's books.....
