We have just finished the shift of all files to our new server.

Over the next few days there may be a glitch or two which could need fixing. A few files went AWOL during the move but we think most have been recovered.

If you happen to notice any thing strange, slowness, missing files, or anything out of the ordinary, please let us know by posting in this thread. We will keep a close eye on it and endeavour to fix all fixable problems ASAP.

Any and all assistance no matter how small will help to make it better for everyone.

Cheers - Neil :U

We should expect some slowness over the next few hours, most members are still connecting to the old server which is communicating to the database on the new server. Its a fraction slower than previously, but still seems very usable.

I just posted something regarding a sauna, when I went to submit, the submit box was blank. The submit box is blank on this one as well. I took a stab at the left box being the one to click for submit, I guessed correctly. Mick.

Hi there

Can you please post (or PM me) a screen shot? We're not seeing the same error here, so a screeny would be a huge help.

thanks

Screen shot, if I can do it that is. I have managed to save a screen shot, put it into MS word, but don't know how to save the graphic to insert here. Perhaps email the word document directly? Mick.

Steven, it's working correctly this morning.

I tried a screen refresh last night at the suggestion of the missus, to no avail.

Quick brief rundown.

For Windows user: Click on PRTSC (PRT SC) button > Start > All Programs > Accessories > Paint > Paste or CTRL V > Save to > Your file name (For size and basic ease it ip probably best to save the file as either a .gif or .jpg) > Once saved you can use it as an attachment, email it or generally do whatever you would do with any graphic.

When in paint you can crop the screen capture to show only the section you want shown, resize and a whole lot more. If you haven't used paint before play with it and have some fun. If you muck it up, click on New do CTRL V thing again and dadah it will be there again so long as you haven't copied anything else.

For Mac users: Sorry - No idea, but there will be something very similar.

Cheers :U

G'day Neil, one thing I've noticed is that I'm now limited to 5 PMs from 40 (I think).

It's no big deal as I don't use them much here, just letting you know. :)

Try the Shift-F5 or CTRL-F5 screen refresh to get the data refreshed from the server - it worked for me.

- I may have missed something but is there a reason for the variety of colours for the names of members.

Administrators
Super Moderators
Moderators
Full Members 21 or more posts
Intermediate Members 11 - 21
Registered 0 - 11

We have been under massive spam attack for over 3 weeks not well over 18,000 spammers detected and deleted in that period, this includes 6,000 in one hit who were sleepers waiting to pounce.

Having the different colours or at least more easily discernible colours helps us at a glance to see the rank of someone posting. and keep a bit more of a handle on what's going on. People are now promoted when they reach the quota of posts. All with less than 10 are moderated and severely limited with what they can do. 11 - 21 is much the same as registered was before, full members have more privileged like signatures, bigger mail box, etc.

Haven't posted all the info as we don't want to tip our hand to the blight of forums and blogs the world over...... Spammers.

This is one of the ways to keep these forums free of , and a lot of unsavory and unwanted garbage, unfortunately it's also a hell of a lot of extra work for moderators and admins.

What is the difference between a Moderator and a Super Moderator?

And no, I don't have some sort of smart @#$% answer to this question.:D

A Moderator is usually on one forum whereas a Super Moderator is across all forums.

I have been on and off the forum over the last 2 days and had no problems to speak of. There was one little hitch when I couldn't connect for a brief time around 12-02pm today but I think that may have been a problem at my end.
surfing the forum has been very consistent and quite quick.
I'm reserving judgment but so far so good.:2tsup::2tsup::2tsup:

Steve,

Before the recent difficulties, 5 to 10 seconds. Maybe a bit longer 6:00 to 10:00 PM AU time, hardly ever over 15 seconds.

Right now, 11:40 AM EST, USA, clicking on "Woodturning General" bookmarked on my Firefox tool bar, 3 seconds to load. Clicking on "Birthday GTG Sunday 30th jan (http://www.woodworkforums.com/f8/birthday-gtg-sunday-30th-jan-129788/) (http://cdn.woodworkforums.com/images/misc/multipage.gif 1 (http://www.woodworkforums.com/f8/birthday-gtg-sunday-30th-jan-129788/) 2 (http://www.woodworkforums.com/f8/birthday-gtg-sunday-30th-jan-129788/index2.html) 3 (http://www.woodworkforums.com/f8/birthday-gtg-sunday-30th-jan-129788/index3.html) 4 (http://www.woodworkforums.com/f8/birthday-gtg-sunday-30th-jan-129788/index4.html) 5 (http://www.woodworkforums.com/f8/birthday-gtg-sunday-30th-jan-129788/index5.html) 6 (http://www.woodworkforums.com/f8/birthday-gtg-sunday-30th-jan-129788/index6.html) 7 (http://www.woodworkforums.com/f8/birthday-gtg-sunday-30th-jan-129788/index7.html))" 2.5 seconds.

I found that things ran much faster last night that they have since the December changeover, and I would suspect probably a fair way faster than for the previous 6 months or so.

Many thanks to Neil, Pauline, Steven and all the rest in the boiler room for making this happen. God knows what it has cost materially to get onto a viable server, but the results are certainly showing. I know Ubeaut has rejected offers of subscription scheme funding in the past because he wants to be the Benevolent Dictator, but maybe it's time for some of us to start offering to pitch in to relieve some of the burden.

Thanks again to all involved.

It is possible to make the screen view larger and smaller in windows, pretty sure ti works in all browsers.

Try these and see what happens. It will be a setting at your end as there is nothing that I can think of at this end that will do this other thab someone posts a massively over-sized picture.

CTRL + (makes screen bigger)
CTRL - (makes screen smaller)
CTRL 0 (standard size screen)

Hope this is of some help.

Hi Neil and co. I clicked on the link to claw hamma's blackwood table WIP from my home email account (about 9:00 pm) and it took a loooong time to load, I closed it and clicked again (sometimes helps:?) I left it "waiting" and went and watched Grand Designs....in that time it had loaded, I also tried the woodwork forum main page from my favourites but that was also slow. I tried a few other fav websites for comparison, no probs. Apart from that it hasn't been to bad.:2tsup:

Hi Neil,

This isn't a technical report, merely some obervations, so please treat it as it pleases you. I've been having varied success, but mostly that's been down to another machine with a much more aggressive wireless card that is sitting right next to the router. When that machine is offline, the forum site is pretty snappy - at least from this old creaker that is at a much greater distance from the router and has a wireless adapter one or two generations before the "n" card in the wife's machine.

Browser seems to make a difference sometimes with the loading of final elements of pages - but it may also be an ISP (Optusnet) problem. ADSL would be nice but we are not allowed to have it as we are on Optus (Telstra don't allow Optus access to them on the local exchange) - we would have to change over to Telstra and we're not doing that. I use Opera and am just moving over to Omniweb as Opera 's javascript-related crashes are too frequent (Opera have abandoned the PowerPC/OS X version so it is effectively dead meat). Recent Firefox versions (>3.0) are too slow in my experience on PPC machines, and I avoid Safari like the plague. Google don't do a version of Chrome for PPC/OS X at all - never have, never will.

At the moment forum access, including editing pages, is pretty good :). Much better than on the previous server - subjective, I know, but the subjectivity of the experience is part of the whole deal.

Cheers,
Alex.

Hi Neil,
Thanks for your note about spammers infilitratng emails and their sending out of multiple emails, probably with viruses from address books. I have been in touch with my Postmaster, Big Pond and they advise as follows:-
"We are experiencing issues delivering emails to Yahoo due to Yahoo's anti-spam program. Yahoo is currently rate limiting connections, although this is good for blocking spam,, it is also blocking many legitimate emails from larger ISP's like ourselves. We are working hard to resolve the issue and expect to have a solution in place shortly. As we do not keep copies of sent email, if you need to readdress it, simply forward it to the correct address from your own sent items folder". I have deleted my whole address book and kept a hard copy for future use. Regards, john m.

160847

If it does, it isn't spam it is Google Ads and these help keep these forums running. You will neversee an ads for a site as these are totally banned, there shouldn't be ads for anything that isn't relevant to the subject being discussed in the thread you are currently in.

As Cliff said it may well be malware in your computer. Whatever it is it isn't coming from this site. The spammers we have are mostly robotic and trying to post their unwanted garbage in threads and posts. They are also mostly under control. Thanks to some sneaky programming and a brilliant, ever-watchful team of moderators and administrators.

SoftLayer who host the new server have been doing maintainable for the last week on their servers out of Dallas, which is where ours are located. To date this hasn't been a problem to us but have a feeling this may have been what happened tonight.

I keep getting notices of maintainable work and schedules from them but no one seems to be able to make heads or tails of them. Another supposed to happen tomorrow but no idea when or even if it will affect us.

Whatever tonight's short outage was it wasn't confined to us. There were a number of international sites also down at the same time.

Cheers - Neil

Hi there

Go here; Woodwork Forums Database Error (http://www.woodworkforums.com/f14/) then try holding the shift key and refresh your browser. To me, it sounds like you have last nights error page cached.

Database errors were happening from 6:54pm to 6:58pm then there was approx 10 minutes of high server load, while it tried to deal with the backed up queries.

I just tried to upload a cropped screen shot of just the message pane but I cant see it here..

Peter,

If you go to "User CP", then to "Settings and Options - Edit options" at the bottom you will find "When sending private messages the forum can make a copy of the message in your Sent Items folder.
Save a copy of sent messages in my Sent Items folder by default"

Click yes to the question and save settings.

Hi there

I think there were some changes to usergroup settings to combat spammers. Your group may have had this setting overlooked, i'll check it out later today.

I've noticed over the last few days the odd post or two that appeared to have no content.
I ignored it and presumed the poster had deleted their post via edit but i found one in a thread just now and it was the only response. And it was by Tea Lady and she is never short of something to say :D
anyway, upon closer investigation the body of the post, including the signature, was so small that I couldn't see it. Only when i highlited the area could i see that something was there. I had to right click on it and open it with something else to read it.
I've noticed this a few times lately and it was usually just one post in the middle of a thread. :?
I'll try and find it again and take a screen shot.
