Now we are empty nesters we are able to inhabit the top floor - nice to watch TV with a cross breeze in Summer. This extra time upstairs allowed the Field Marshall to consider that the light in the upstairs study was a bit ordinary and should be replaced.

This left a couple of exposed screw holes in the ceiling that then needed to be patched.

This meant the ceiling had to be repainted.

The walls then looked a bit flat against the nice freshly painted ceiling and it was suggested they needed repainting as well.

While I was at it, she had never been happy with the architraves and skirtings, so could they be replaced at the same time (she assures me this would make painting easier as I would not have to mask up the woodwork beforehand).

Gee, the carpet in the room now looks tattier than she remembered (when viewed with the nice fresh paint and woodwork), better get that replaced.

If that room is getting new floorcoverings, it makes sense to think about redoing all the upstairs floor coverings.....wooden floating floor in the Rumpus Room would be nice, but that makes the lino in the kitchen and the floor tiles in the bathroom look out of place.

How about extending the wooden floor into the kitchen?...that then means new cupboards and benchtops to complete the freshen up...

I explain that I cannot 'just' replace the bathroom floor tiles as that would compromise the waterproofing up the walls...OK, how about retiling the walls as well then.....if I am doing that may as well reconfigure to make it more workable....

The bathroom would work better if the doorway was moved, that meant removing one of the walls of the hallway to the Rumpus Room to allow a more 'flowing' access to the new doorway .....

Maybe I should have just left the damn light where it was!!!
