We are being told there are a number of issues with forum speeds since the switch over to the new ISP on 20th December. To sort out these problems is really hard and we are trying our best. However it's like looking for a needle in a haystack trying to track down the cause(s) of these problems.

So could you please help where and when possible, by notifying us of any speed issues you encounter whilst using the forums. Slow loading of pages, page hangs or times out when loading or posting etc.

What we need to know is:

What happened? (time out, hang, very slow response, etc)
Time of day when it happened?
What message if any you received?
Where it happened? (loading a thread, replying to a post, looking at PM, etc)
Page address /url of problem if possible?
ANYTHING ELSE you think might be of use. (like internet hook-up eg. satellite, cable, adsl adsl2, wireless, etc speed if known)
IF SLOW LOADING - approximate time page took to load.

Any and all assistance we can get will be greatly appreciated and hopefully will help to speed things up considerably.

Cheers - Neil :U

PS If you think the forums are running faster since Dec 20th please also let us know.

Hi Neil and the back room guys and gals.

Some things have been a bit slower loading here (Melbourne Outer East Optus Cable), but I just put it down to the transpacific pipeline being busier with the Christmas break. Slow patches have been random but seem to effect other sites as well which is why I figured that the pipeline was busy. Certainly hasn't been enough of an issue to cause concern.

Just run a speedtest (http://www.speedtest.net/) 20Mb/s from Melbourne, 4Mb/s from San Diego, so the pipeline seems good at the moment 2.00 pm Friday AEST.

Thanks and hope all is well for you.

G'day Neil!
Just came across your Thread/request. I have noticed some definite slowness over the past little while particularly at this moment when trying to load posts from "New Posts"
and edit a reply to a post. Time taken to load and save approx 15-25 secs.
My line speed is 1311kbps and Download speed is .16MB/s. I will leave it to the techs to work out if it is good or not!:?

Lodged this site problem with Watson three days ago, still no fix?
It started after the changes.

Would you know what is causing these prob's?

At 3:58pm today had trouble connecting to the site. Message "Īnternet Explores Unable to Display Page" or words to that effect. Two retries resulted in my terminating the connection attempt and returned later.

Have had problems over the last couple of weeks when trying to open a thread from New Posts in the new window. No additional info on this as was not aware then of a possible problem.

Have had the system "freeze" after hitting Submit when making a Reply in a thread.

The first attempt to submit this after doing an edit resulted in a freeze.

I've been having problems loading up pages.
Just now happened. I was in the "General woodworking forums". I clicked out, in the top left to return to "woodworking forums" and it timed out.
I'm using firefox, firefox announced it had timed out, and "try again" I tried again and it timed out once more.
I then left the forums altogether and refreshed, then clicked on my bookmark to the forums. It hanged for a while, then arrived.
Cheers!

Edit: I just had problems sending this message. Long hang time.

Hi Neil,
I just posted a message on the Renovator's forum at 2.38pm Perth time on 7/1/11. No probs with logging on but then I clicked on the Woodwork Forums link on Renovate forum New Posts page. It took about 30 seconds to connect to the Woodwork forum home page.

Thank you all for your response and for bearing with us. The problem has been resolved to an extent but still not happy. Our so called brilliant new server has let us down a little over two weeks into using it.

We will be looking at alternatives over the weekend and may be changing from the supposed new high tec, infallible type cloud server back to a good old fashioned hard drive or similar.

Anyway for now the problem seems to be fixed and some stability has returned to the forums at least for the present time. Thanks again for the info posted here, It was a help.

If you notice any more problems please let us know in here.

Hi Neil,

Today is the first time I have visited the site in several months, and I certainly noticed a slowdown in response to what I had previously encountered. When looking at items for sale(Or Sold)

I am a formaer Database Designer and Developer, and am wondering if the issue may be the result of the Database of entries having grown to the point whre it is unmanageable.

Regardless of whether this may be a factor in the slow page posting and occasional timeouts, I suggest looking at moving sold items from the main database to an alternate database, allowing members to view such if needed, but limiting the size of the database by limiting it to jut the unsold items. I also suggest allowing users to select a filter that shows items from their own stat only,.

Good luck resolving the issue.

What we need to know is:

What happened? (time out, hang, very slow response, etc)

The page just sat there for 5 minutes on one occasion, 2.5 minutes another, and 15 after leaving it to do whatever. So I guess this can be said to be VERY VERY SLOW or a hang.

Time of day when it happened?

This has occurred throughout the day and evening from 8AM Pacific time to 12 AM Pacific time.

What message if any you received?

None

Where it happened?
(loading a thread, replying to a post, looking at PM, etc)

I tried to load the thread for the Aussie swap, the thread for pen turning, the thread for reporting the hangup, and my messages.

Page address /URL of problem if possible?
ANYTHING ELSE you think might be of use. (like internet hook-up eg. satellite, cable, adsl adsl2, wireless, etc speed if known)

I use a DSL wired modem running through a wireless D-link router. I am 10 feet from the router. Same thing occurs if hardwired into the modem. I have nio problems loadig the other forums or sites I visit. They all are reasonably fast.

IF SLOW LOADING - approximate time page took to load.

It never finished loading. Just sat there with the message "waiting for woodworkforum.com."
Any and all assistance we can get will be greatly appreciated and hopefully will help to speed things up considerably.

Cheers - Neil :U

PS If you think the forums are running faster since Dec 20th please also let us know.

Not running very fast at all. If I start it from scratch it loads fairly quickly then dies off. Once I am in the forum it seems to fall off.

Good luck with this one. Internet issues are always a pain in the *%^*&T^, if ya know what I mean.

It may not be related in any way to the data base problems currently being experienced.

Message down on the bottom left corner says either waiting for woodworkingforums or waiting for cdn.woodworkingforums. the wait can be as long as 20seconds or even longer yesterday and day before as I gave up.

PS just to prove me wrong that one was instantanious

I've been surfing the forum for the last hour or so and so far no problem. Pages are coming up quickly and have had no trouble with posting. Maybe we are back on track.:2tsup: or maybe I'm just lucky..

Still hanging from time to time but when it's working properly it's isn't too bad.

We spent the best part of the day fending off major spam attacks, close to 200 new users banned in the last 24 hours and even more than that on Renovate Forums. This may account for some slowness at times today as IP searches were being done throughout the day and they are extremely resource hungry things to do.

Anyway I think we might be looking at another server shift if the counters tonight show any more slow page loads, hangs, drop-outs, etc.

Thanks for all the info.

Cheers :U

Thanks, I'll check for an obvious cause around this time. Were you just browsing or attempting to post a message?

How many times did you see the error?

Is it still occurring? if so, please post a url you're having trouble with.

ISP is definitely a problem.

I am on ADSL 2+ which is fairly fast here in the bush, any page loads almost instantly, Woodwork Forum takes ages. Sorry, cheers and Happy New Year, hope all have a good one.

Jan.11, 2011, 10:05 Eastern Standard Time in USA.

Tried to reply to NAI's post, after about 10 seconds got timed out message, clicked resend, got site unavailable message.

Last few days Woodwork Forum has been a bit slower than usual - about 10 seconds from click to action complete.

Time would be between 10:00 AM and 9:00 PM Eastern Standard Time in USA.

Thanks for the forum, I feel very close to those on the Woodturning section.

I wanted to note a strange problem, maybe this isn't the correct thread for it but here goes anyway. When I visit the forum as a visitor I can see all the photos attached to threads no problem. However, when I'm logged in I have to click on each photo link in order to view the image. Shouldn't it be the other way around?

Not sure if this is related or no - here goes:

I posted this thread http://www.woodworkforums.com/f213/sliding-dovetail-minimise-wracking-129780/

However It does not seem to show up in new posts or in any form of search (tried searching by poster, by keyword etc)

I was wondering why I got no reply, so searched for the post & it did not come up. It does show under "The Workbench" subforum

Ross (and others interested), I find the best way to search the forums is to use google. The command to use is:

"SEARCH WORDs + site:http://www.woodworkforums.com" in the google search box

So, for your search try -

"Sliding dovetail to minimise wracking site:www.woodworkforums.com"

To find "shellac" try

"shellac site:www.woodworkforums.com"

Thanks Groggy,

I really wanted to highlight the fact that this post seems to have some problems that may indicate an underlying database error, as the entry did not show up in my "New Posts" or in results using the site search functions that rely on the forum database (as opposed to Google, which maintains its own index of pages that it discovers by crawling sites)

I do agree that Google is a fine way to search & gives you way more options to narrow or expand your search than the forum tools. The Google Advanced Search Form is a useful first step, but you can get a lot more power by understanding Google search syntax - this link (http://www.googleguide.com/crafting_queries.html)has details for those intersted (worth reading, as it will make your use of Google far more productive in general, not just for searching the forums )

Hi there

The new posts page is basically a search for posts you haven't already read, so viewing your new post would eliminate it from this search from here on - its no longer new.

Regarding searching by keywords, it should show up in the results. I tested a search using the exact title as keywords and nothing except this thread  I'll check it out soon.
