Hello all, I need some advice for a present for my beloved. We've just bought a great house in the country with lots of fallen tree roots and interesting woody-bits. My partner has always wanted to work with wood, and has made a couple lovely hand carved pieced, but never got going with it properly. With his birthday coming up, and to celebrate our new woody home, I'd like to buy him a beginners' style hand carving set. I've been casting about on the net and the yellow ages, but I don't know where to go. If anyone could recommend what would be a good starter kit for the hand-carver, or where there's a good shop I should go to (I'm in Preston, Melbourne, until we move) or what the good brands are, I'd be very grateful. I'd like to spend about $150.
Once I give him the prezzy, I'll turn this (secret, for now) membership of your group over to him. ...unless he's embarrassed about his romantic girlfriend's plans and wants to rejoin anonymously!
Many thanks in advance, from a lover of one who loves wood!

The best place to get the information you are after is in the Woodcarving Forum down the page a bit.

Welcome to the forum. Not sure on your area but do pose another question as has suggested.
No reason why you can not also join.

Hey you know CARBA-TEC will sell you enough wood carving gear to keep your hubby busy for the next 10 years. I recommend them, he might even be able to do something super artistic like a set of hand carved front entrance doors? cheers
