I am in the middle of a series of finishing experiments and this morning woke up to a big surprise:
One of the finishes is as follows:
Sanded down to 400 grit;
then polished up with EEE-ultrashine
then saturated with organoil hard burnishing oil
then wet sanded with 1200 grit and all excess wiped off
then polished over with ubeaut trad. wax.
Result was a superb quality sheen with a silky touch. The best result so far. However, this morning, (after a coldish and wet night,) the piece was completely matt! And last night it was still the silky satin.
On checking, I found: The surface was still as silky smooth as before, the matt patina was optical only. No risen woodgrain. Rubbing firmly with a finger would restore the satin sheen. A 100x magnification with a microscope did not reveal anything. I suspect the organoil has "done something."
Any ideas on what happened? How can I prevent this?
