Another question about tung oil.

Since I opened the old tin that was given to me, it has all gelled, sort of like eggwhite :oo:
It seems to work OK but is there any way I can get it back to oily consistency?

Sorry, no answer on this question, however just some supportive understanding on your recent observations on how many responses you do or do not get to your posts.

I am mystified to why some posts get a fantastic response, yet others...... well you know.

Use it quick. It won't stay like that for long and there's no going back.

Wolfie, I don't think there is anything you can do about it unfortunately. Sometimes you can push through the top layer of the oil and reach fresh oil but as suggested above, I would use any part of it that can be used as soon as possible. It has outlived it's shelf life.

I was caught out like that one night with danish oil that had gone to jelly . I needed to get the first coat on to allow it to soak in so that I could sand away some really bad tearout and furry grain. the next day .
I hauled as much of the d.o out of the tin as I could into a shallow dish , and hand rubbed it into the bowl , until it , and I , had had enough .
It looked a bit lumpy and patchy the next day , but sanded up well , and took the top coat ok .

Over a long period I've thrown out a lot of half tins of Tung oil that I didn't use before they went to jelly (and worse). They just go off while you are not watching, between projects. What I did with the last tin I bought was to pour half the tin off straight away into a plastic drink bottle, squeezed out most of the air and put it aside. True to form, I used what was left in the tin for the project I was on and now I will wait to see how the set aside portion behaves while I wait for the next job.
