Good Evening Friends,
I've always used tapes for measuring for my no- frills woodworking. As I start building more"refined" projects, what should I use to get more accurate measurements? Folding rules? Straight ones?

I use a 1 metre stainless rule or a story stick

I would use the straight one because "rules arn't meant to be broken" :o :o :o

I use a bit of paper with marks on the edge, kind of like a story stick, but not as long or as hard.

When I want to get really precise, I use a dial caliper to do the measuring, then to make sure that I get an appropriately blokey result, mark with broad tipped marker pen, and cut freehand in the dark.

Good Evening Friends,
Rather than go through a lengthy explanation I am going to attach the answer for you to decide for yourselves.

Thank you for your support.

Ralph,

I loved the variation on the tapes but I reckon a metric tape would help for starters!

Reminds me of early in my humpy building career, I had a couple of bricklayers who never gave up with their stretchy vinyl tape. They could get any brick base square on the diagonal to within a hair!

When I checked one base there was an extra brick down one side, but with them driving their tape they measured exactly the same!

I don't care how good the reinforced fibreglass tapes are, I have never been able to bring myself to use anything but steel ever since!

Cheers,

P :D

Hello Biting Midge,
I would have liked to have posted a metric tape picture but, didn't have one to attach. I agree with you on those plastic tapes as they can be stretched to show a square anything if they pull hard enough. Never did like them.

Thanks for your reply.
