A bit of British wildlife as locomotive pictures didn't generate any response.

The picture of this hawk (buzzard) was taken from our backdoor last week, the bug ger has eaten most of our small sparrows this summer.

Jow,

Here we call sparrows spriggers and they are an imported pest so a few less is no loss. Do you call them spriggers in the UK?

BLOODY SPOGGIES!!!!
I reckon the British government should be made to remove all the imported pests that their effin officials brought out here foxes rabbits (tho they are now under sorta control) starlings all because lord poop coulnt indulge in his foxhunts and pidgeon pies.
I have a 25 acre block in an arid area and its only the last few years that there are no rabbits (calicy(sp) ) and foxes (Mr Winchester) and the odd fox, rabbit, feral cat or dog gets to sponser the growth of a tree as fertiliser.
At last the native trees are popping back up even tho we only get 9" rain a good year. And no Im not a greenie just slightly tainted or as Al says 'beige'
Death to all sparrows and their ilk
Pete
PS I wonder if we can sue the aristocracy for this?? :D

Funny thing I love the British wildlife which is in very short supply, You lucky b's must have imported all of ours.
Remember you have the excuse to go out and shoot a few bunnies ;)
and the young hunters amongst you can get out the air pistol and practice shooting SPARROWS.
So our exports to your continent must have some uses.

PS get some of our buzzards (they hunt young rabbits and sparrows)

We can look back and say "well that was a dumb thing to do " when we now know the impact of rabbits, foxes etc. Doubt if those releasing foxes, rabbits etc had much idea of the problems that they were introducing. Sometimes its easy to forget how much we know.

One bit of England that I could do without here is English Ivy. Finally plucked up the courage to point out to my next door neighbour that while he might like his fences and trees covered in ivy I didn't and I was fed up of ripping the stuff out on my side of the fence. I told him I wasn't going to fall out with him over it but I wanted him to know how I felt just in case he wasn't over keen on it himself.

All credit to him that while his initial reaction was, "well actually I like it" he went away and thought about it and this weekend ripped it all out. Of course it will grow back again but hopefully it will be a while before it makes another bid for world domination.

The Bass Coast Council has a great booklet detailing all of the "problem" plants in their area.

Went past one of the lakes north of Camperdown last week and there was hundreds of black swans walking around on the beaches. Didn't have my camera unfortunately.

A black cockie was really going bananas near my back door a few days ago. Expect some crawly mighta had a feed of black cockie eggs.

Don't you believe it! ... From BBC (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/lincolnshire/3641404.stm)

Seems that the black swans, although smaller, are a little nastier than our native white variety!

"The White Swan was originally brought to Western Australia by early British colonists. The birds were reportedly brought to Northam at the turn of the century. They soon found the local river, with its small islands and banks thickly covered in vegetation, an ideal breeding ground and quickly adopted Northam as their home. Nowhere else in Western Australia has the White Swan found a natural breeding ground. The swans are protected and cared for by local volunteer swan wardens, who have built up special relationships with the birds. They are fed each morning at 0630 on Broome Terrace next to Newcastle Street Bridge. The White Swans of Northam have been declared a protected species."

A quote from a Government publication in WA. The black swan is the native, the white swan is the import.

Thanks Robert - in case you don't realise, I am a Brit, in UK! My post was intended to convey the opposite of yours, in effect. White (mute) swans are native to Britain, but some wag imported black swans from Australia.

In many ponds, the black swans have become a real menace. Swans are very violent and territorial creatures (cygnets get killed if they stray into the wring family's 'zone'). Black swans are smaller but even more agressive than the white ones, so tend to take over when introduced.

thanks but we have a good supply of falcons and kestrels hawks ect and rifle and shotgun works on most with the warmer weather we are seeing the start of the crawly season already avoided 4 biggish (5-6ft) western brown snakes in the last couple days just glad they dont think we are food.

Al we are all imports including the people our forefathers displaced but at least we do prefer to work not bludge the system.

Bob yes all other things were brought in for pest control and became the problem including so called bird fanciers who breed Indian doves to the point that they then release them as there is no market and they then compete with native stocks usually to the detriment of the natives. These people should be fined heavily but it is not an issue as its not 'dangerous'
oh poop maybe I just get the chainsaw and cut some more desert timber for some scroll work Im doin :D safer than goin on about imported pests

It's definitely wriggly season, saw a rather lively little tiger in Doncaster last Wednesday and we have spotted a couple of red bellied blacks on our place, just out to give the mules a fright.
Where are the Kookaburras when you need them? (A relative of the Kingfisher).

I went to it and got nothing, what sort of pop ups?
I thought it was a safe site (albeit free) and always looking for some advertising revenue.
Anyway, some local flora...

You probably have some spyware on your computer that responds to certain links or words.

jow104

To Iain and Bazza

The popup that appeared was the one that informs you that your computer may have the spyware and suggests you obtain some virus protection program from the dialogue page showing. I just ticked the exit cross quick .

Any advice accepted.

Go here and download Spybot and run it on your computer. You will be surprised on what you will find.

By the way do a backup before you run it.

Thanks for links and advice re backup, I think about a year ago I did download and had some conflict . Since that time have avoided so called free downloads. But might give it another try, using backup as you suggest.
