I found this forum while searching the web for sites on guitar building. I'd also like to build a large rocking horse for my little girl, hopefully before she grows up. My wife has a few projects for me to try too. I'm new to woodworking and so have a lot to learn. For many years I worked as a fitter-machinist and so am used to machining steel, aluminium and brass. I am finding wood to be very different to work with as compared to metal. Also, I am wondering if most woodworkers eventually buy their own tools, or if instead, there are carpentry or workshop spaces available for hire.

Machining timber is better than what you do at the moment. Sawdust and shavings smell sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good!:p

most people buy their own tools.
i dont like using other peoples tools, because when i break them, i have to replace theirs also.

better to start off buying your own.

you wont need much to make a rocking horse.
jigsaw, circular saw, router and a drill.

Thanks for your welcome and also your comments on tools, especially about using other people's tools and maybe breaking them. I'll start looking around at some tools to buy soon and probably start off with getting a workbench of some kind, maybe a folding one. I'm completely new to woodworking and so have heaps to learn. I'm looking forward to it all.
