You could try browsing some of the antique dealer sites. Don't know if there are that many in Oz. Most are US & Europe. I tried this myself ages ago. We bought an Amoir' from Uk which i knew was imported from Austria around 1900. I can tell it's oak but really wanted to see if there were any others the same style and what it might be worth. Couldn't find one exactly the same but there are obviously thousands of different styles. Some of them do give the history and what they are made of.

Try asking the Furniture History Society (http://www.furniturehistory.org.au/). I think the area was quite a busy furniture making area.
