Hi all. I have cut some 2mm veneers for a table top and some of the veneers showed these blotches. They looked like an oil but I have tried rubbing with thinners, turps and acetone all of which did nothing. Can anyone offer any suggestions as I feel that when I put a finish on the top the blotches will be a bit unsightly . :C

Cheers Peter

The only suggestion I can give, is to coat the veneer a couple of light coats of white shellac and then apply your finish. The shellac should help with the blotchiness.

Thanks for that suggestion Wendy . I tried that with a sample piece of veneer. Coated one side with 2 coats of white shellac ( 2 years old)and then apllied NC finish to each side . The shellac helped a little but did not make it vanish so the spots ,if they do not fade over time will have to be a conversation piece . Luckily the spots are only on the butterfly extension panel of an extension table.:)

Cheers

Not uncommon with myrtle, and seem to be caused by variations in the angle of the grain to the surface. The shellac should prevent other finishes making them look even darker.
