Hope you are well and recovering. Best of luck.

Hey Ern!
Hope you are healing well. Wrists can take a little time. DAMHIK It may keep you of the bike and from turning for a few weeks.
Take even more care of yourself.

Gee Ern, don't you have enough fun with dangerous rotating things if they are bolted to the ground? :)

When I was a little tacker my dad was swiped by the tail of a truck on a narrow mountain road and luckily picked up some time later by a police jeep. For that reason he prohibited me ever driving a bike. I do have a licence but have never driven one. I call it my "licence to kill" :D Or be killed, more likely. :( Get well soon.

Ta guys.

Yeah, I'd dropped in on Jeffs event on the Mon; Tues I got hit riding the bike down the Bogong High Plains Rd. KO'd and no memory of it but looking at bike and gear figure I clipped or was clipped by an oncoming vehicle.

3 days in hospital and two ops on the right wrist for multiple fractures. The 'wet carpenter' put in a plate with 6 screws (being semi-conscious I could hear him asking for a #23 screw or somesuch), then the 2nd time round he did some wiring up of bones. Nec for a woodturner he reckoned.

So it'll be 5 weeks in a cast and then the wires come out.

Had great care in the 2 Gippsland hospitals and a New Year's day to remember. Not.

Worst thing was coming off the 2 day morphine high, :;

And it would be the right hand :(

I've owned three bikes, and my Pop told me that when I got to the point that I thought I could ride one, that it'd ride me. He was right. Last wreck was in 1963, and I haven't been on one since.
Better luck to you. :)

Appreciate your kind words folks.

Vern, I was trundling down the road slowly, maybe 40 kph, as it was narrow and winding. There's no scuffing on the leather pants and little on the jacket. A hunch is that after the knock I was able to stop the bike but then fainted and fell over.

Wood borer, after this experience I look forward to calling in and taking in the fresh air.

Anyway, it could've been a lot worse. A guy my age was killed nearby the day before. The ambos attending that one and said the oncoming car was on the wrong side of the road and cleaned him up.

Since returning to riding a few years ago I've done over a 100,000 km of hard riding with a few minor offs. This one is unsettling though as I don't know who or what was accountable, and esp for the nauseatingly surreal experience of spending a wakeful night after surgery with a dead limb, fearing that nerve damage was done. The docs hadn't told me that this was normal with the spinal block they used; and the nurses regularly kept the fear alive by asking whether the fingers had feeling or could be moved.

So it's a time for re-evaluating. The existing hand problem was caused by an earlier off, and doubtless in time this one will produce arthritis in the wrist. I'm not sure how many more bills of that kind I want to pay.

Takes a long time to heal properly, I had a broken wrist a couple of years ago and I know how painful the recovery is. Not a nice expeerience but could have been much worse. Hope you recover quicker than I did.

Never figured you for a Fireblade riding kind of guy from your Avatar, but there you go . Glad it was relatively minor (not that a busted wrist would feel terirbly minor at the time :C).

Thanks guys.

I'm starting on the seriously irritated stage of recovery where temper fracture is the main risk to self and others

The Fireblade was dropped off yesterday by Club mates and there's more damage to the RHS than I'd been told (the Club Secretary describes anything short of a write-off as 'minor cosmetic') . The oggy knob is bent well back; tank dinged; two fairing panels; muffler; mirrors; indicators; fairing nose sub-frame. No frame damage that's visible so it'll be repairable.

OK, it didn't happen without pics so here's one. The plate holding the head of the radius together AFAIK. Reckon we should introduce orthopods to Kreg pocket hole jigs

Commiserations on the crash Ern, sorry to hear you have no recollection to help you work out what to avoid next time (cars maybe?). From the sound of the damage to the bike you may be very lucky you aren't showing us xrays of the inside of a reconstructed knee. I cleaned up a car with the cylinder head of my Guzzi once and the big metal protrusion is the only reason I've still got two legs. May your recovery be swift and sure, and I hope you can share some of the things you learn with all this enforced research time when you "return".

How much does the theory of cutting with flatwork translate to turning?

Not sure if that question was rhetorical, Ern.... :)

If not..... more so with power tools, less so with hand tools. Have to make those hand tools blades real sharp to be able to manually push or hit them through wood.

Update: at my request the Omeo cop kindly went looking for info on the cause of the crash and found a report had been filed at Tallangatta police station by the rider of an oncoming bike who had swerved to avoid a Jeep Cherokee and in correcting that tangled with me.

I'll try and get a copy of the report and if it shows I wasn't at fault then there'll be no excess to pay and no drop in no-claim bonus.

It's a relief to know.

The wrist gets x-rayed this week as a check up; the slab comes off 2 weeks later, then the wires will be removed mid-Feb.

Now you have really piqued my curiosity Ern. How did the other bike tangle with you and not come down as well? Did he stop when it happened or keep going until he got to Omeo? I'm sure you have more questions that I do about all that, but when you do find out how it all happened, please let us know. I guess this makes the damage and injuries a bit easier to understand tho'.

rsser
10th January 2010, 11:34 AM
Yes, a puzzle.

The Jeep driver apparently didn't stop but it's poss they weren't aware of the other rider's difficulties and the subsequent fall-out.

The rider may well have stopped and helped but didn't stuff a note with his name and address in my pocket unfortunately.

Have just been on to Tall. PS and they can find no report in the system from their end. Curiouser and curiouser.

rsser
10th January 2010, 05:31 PM
Latest:

The rider involved did in fact make a report at the T. PS but I got his name from Omeo police, found a number for him in the Wpp, a local, rang him, and he admitted fault.

We've come to a verbal agreement re costs.

So that's a relief, as is knowing I wasn't a complete dickhead.

Full marks to Mark Britton of VicPol at Omeo.

PS Now I know i can grieve at last. Jesus H, it hurts.

10th January 2010, 09:56 PM
Rsser - a written note to VicPol HQ on how helpful the local Police were would be a nice idea - lots of country cops wear themselves out helping people & never get any official recognition for it, its only the ones they drop that get noticed.

Slab and bandage were removed y'day for a 'wound check'. Happily no suppurating mess there but still a lot of swelling and orders are to rest up more.

The kaywires were sticking out of the skin like mini coat hanger hooks; supposed to but nauseating to see :ohcrap:

It's reslabbed for two weeks, then an x-ray to check and if OK it and the wires come off.

New slab is fibreglass and lighter than the plaster but constant pressure is making the palm burn. Preferred analgesia is amber fluid; the opiates cloud the mind and clog the bowels.

Good to hear things are progressing well Ern.

Thought of you the other day as we drove from Mt Hotham (where we were staying) to Omeo. Nice bit of road and seemingly a magnet for motor bike riders, an almost constant procession of bkes going in both directions.

Coming up the mountain from Bright to Mt Hotham, quite a few bike riders seemed to have difficulty seeing the line in the middle of the road though, can be a bit hairy when you are confronted by a bike on the wrong side of the road and nowhere to go!:oo:

You bet :D

Yes Fred, the spur going up to Hotham is a technical bit of road. Hard to ride fast and smooth cos of short straights and tight bends. Over the plateau is magic OTOH - fast sweepers with good sightlines. Off it down to Omeo is different again; keep your nerve and it can be done fast and smooth - one for experienced riders.

So you rub it on ... :p

Well I saw a specialist physio and now have new exercises to keep the fingers and elbow flexible.

The old cast was by turns ineffective or torture so she fitted a thermoplastic splint with perforations so it breathes. It's v. Flash Gordon: silver with red straps.

Should see the looks I get walking down the street ... lol.

Continue to get great support from the TAC; they paid 2 nights motel accomm needed as the crash was in the country, inc travel costs for my partner to come down from Melb to ferry me around; and they'll cover 2 hours of gardening a month.

Yeah, I am chirpier thanks Bob.

The north paw is now close to useless but I've learned to open a bottle with the sth paw and two bare feet .. result!

Next challenge will be to trim the face fungus with the left hand .. that result may not be pretty.

Next week they'll x-ray the paw and if it looks OK the wires will be extracted and the wrist can come out of the splint when at rest.

Might then get a decent night's sleep ... lookshurry!

ps hard to manage the pain killers; the opiate sends me off nicely but is too much, and I end up sleeping the wrong way and wake up in in worse pain after 4 hours or so and that's the end of the night; the strong over-the-counter jobs have me awake ditto and another dose may or may not get me back to sleep.

LOL, the clinic nurse had it worse than me with a broken arm; getting the bra on, she said, the hubby could help with; dealing with other things wasn't quite as simple

It's a bummer managing the pain relief, especially when the novelty has worn off and all you want is some relief from having to deal with it all the time. I don't have any useful suggestions that haven't already been mentioned, but if you decide to to opt for Rum Relief, can I recommend a drop from Jamaica branded Premium Estate Origine. SIL gave me a bottle for Xmas, and it helped dull the pain of having to salvage my boat from an Island bay last week. Not too shabby the next morning - something I put down to the lack of impurities in the product.

Keep healing sport, I'm sure it will fade like the pain of childbirth. (I can't remember it hurting at all)

and I end up sleeping the wrong way and wake up in in worse pain after 4 hours or so and that's the end of the night

Doesn't the missus sit up all night keeping an eye on you to make sure that you don't get into an uncomfortable position, I know mine would :roflmao:.

Next challenge will be to trim the face fungus with the left hand .. that result may not be pretty.

If the TAC will pay for a gardener maybe they will pay for a barber as well.

Chin up ol' chap! Whatto! :D

Maybe the TAC gardener will multi-task ;-}

GJ, I'm sure she would if I asked nicely, but then I'd stay awake worrying about her lack of rest :(

Peter, yes, it'll fade. Be good to speed it up with a little daylight saving tho :U

Now what happened with the boat? :oo:

Have been game enough to remove splint and 'sock' a coulpe of times now and rub some feeling back into the skin ... ah, bliss ... a weightless feeling for a couple of hours.

Half the palm still hasn't recovered full feeling though.

sorry to hear about this unfortunate event mate, but some good will come out of it.

Thanks GM.

I am sh*tting myself about whether a usable hand will come out of this, and am sceptical about orthopods - but I'm in their hands and can only trust.

They'll fix you up, after all, it's only mechanics and if you have pain then the nerves are working (says Dr Mick the draftsman:oo:)
Hope you start getting some better rest soon.

Thanks Mick; hadn;t thought of it like that.

We celebrated my daughter's birthday yesterday and a generous dose of NZ Pinot led to 7 hours of sleep :2tsup:

The K wires come out tomorrow at 9.30 all things OK, and not knowing what this involves of course Google came to the rescue. Need to know when my partner should be prepared to come and pick me up.

I'd thought a local in theatre under a soothing dose of Pethidine or the like.

Google returned 3 vids for heaven's sake.

And puke!!!

YouTube- Broadcast Yourself.

Course mine may be different, but maybe some of Rumpig's Bundy for brekky might be a good idea!

Ern, ear plugs will help too!:oo: Took my 12 year old son to the bone doctor to have several wires removed from thumb and wrist. Doc assured him he wouldn't feel a thing, and it wasn't too bad, but it sounded awful to me (and him):o
