Wr have recently ripped up carpet and had the floors underneath sanded, only to discover that there is a centimeyre gap between the skirting and the new floor. How do i fill this gap to produce a professional finish?

I've had this problem.
Best solution would be to remove and replace (lower) the skirting boards, but this is a big job. I didn't do it.
I bought some pine quarter round beading (I think that's what it's called) a fixed it over the gap. All the big hardware stores carry it. Painted the same coulour as the skirting, it looked fine. Easier to paint it before you fit it.
Other people here with much more knowledge than me will have better solutions.

It would definitely be better to get something to cover the gap than move the skirts in my opinion. Move them down 10mm and you've got to repaint the wall as well!
Look for Fillet Mould, skotia or as said quarter round. These should be available in cypress but if you want to paint it go for a pre primed MDF available from the hardware.
