What bit of code do I have to break to stop 'smart' URL renaming?

Ok - this is a recent 'feature' that is annoying me....

You know when you post a URL like 'http://www.finewoodworking.com/' and the bulletin board software thinks 'oh wow man, no way, that's like far too computeroid for people, man, I'm gunna look up that page right now and use a better title for it man...' and it rewrites it as Fine Woodworking - videos, project plans, how-to articles, magazines, and books (http://www.finewoodworking.com/)

What bit of php do I have to permanently break to STOP THAT IRRITATING BEHAVIOUR!!!!!!! Thank you computer, I am quite capable of writing a description and hotlinking it if I feel that this is either more appropriate or more understandable...until I do this, LEAVE MY URLs ALONE!!!!1eleven.

I don't know but you can edit out if you switch off WYSWYG in the reply.

The single quotes you used seem to have preserved the expression you want, as well as the hot link. That's probably the best work-around. IIRC, double quotes disable the hot link, sometimes deliberately. But it's hard to tell how long that will last.

I have an extensive list of forum posts in the old format (t=nnnnn, without descriptors), and they're automatically converted to the new format when I post a new link. The 'nnnnn' stays with it, at least, so they still work.

I feel your pain, but changes of all kinds are inevitable. Trying to be resilient can keep you agile.

Switch off WYSIWYG? Oh - "Automatically retrieve titles from external links" under Miscellaneous Options.

Yes Joe. That is the one.

MS you turn off the
Automatically retrieve titles from external links under the message box, however this has to be done every time you put a link in as it automatically resets.

I personally like it.

I'll just be roadkill on the highway of progress!!

(which of course now explains why my posts sometimes seem to take ages and ages to save - trying to retrieve header info for a linked site that is responding slowly!!)

I just tried the UN-checking trick on a reply to another thread, and BINGO! No need for the single quotes.:2tsup:

MS, if the address is displayed, you can stop loading the rest of the page to copy the address. Brute force (re-typing) also works, but must be exact.

Permanent solution to disable it - Greasemonkey (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748) and the following user script - http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/8199 will automatically uncheck all boxes and disable the annoying VBSEO plug-in "Automatically retrieve titles from external links" from rewriting your carefully thought-out links.
