Feast Watson Decking Stain (Merbau)

Just realised I posted this in the wrong section - sorry everyone!

I'm after a little advice. I've just stained my treated pine deck with Feast Watson's 1-coat merbau decking stain (oil based), and the colour has turned out GREAT, but i'm not really happy with the matt finish. My questions is - can I put a natural decking oil over the top of the stain to give it a nicer finish? Something like Sceney's - or other suggestions perhaps?

Hi Rob,

Glad you like the colour, it's a good quality stain that one. As for putting oil over the top of it, you just have to be careful that the timber is going to accept more product into the timber first. Try lightly splashing some water droplets onto the timber and seeing if they bead on the surface or not. If they do bead, then you'll have to wait some time before the timber will take more, otherwise you should be ok to put some oil on it also.

Given that you've only put one coat onto a softwood, I'd say it should happily drink up some more, but do the test first. But I wouldn't recommend using Sceney's stuff. It's not going to hold up outside as well as a good quality decking oil like Organoil will, so you'll just end up redoing it frequently and paying more in the long run.

Talk to the paint shop people, or better still F&w. You are better off using products from the same manufacturer as they are more likly to be compatible.
