Hi All,
Scott here from SA, 28yo, married with my first kid on the way. I have been interested in woodcarving since I was a kid and dad and I whittled a couple of things while we were travelling Europe, but I haven't done anything since. I have decided to make a new stock for my rifle (I live on a farm, and have several rifles for feral pest control) and also would like to carve some bookends for the babies room.

I have no idea where to start, what tools to buy, where to get the wood and what type (I am hoping for the kids things I could use wood from the farm, we have a lot of red and other gum, and perhaps some almond wood.

I will post in the carving section asking some questions next.

Looking forward to being a member of this forum, and hoping I can meet a local who might like to share some tips in person.

just had to butt in and say Welcome Sillybgoat :U

Tools lots or very little depends on who you ask and how far you willing to spend.

Sounds like you had bets start a wood shed for storing the timbers Almond wood now that sounds nice.

We have tons and tons of several year dried wood just sitting around (waiting to be chopped up and go into the fireplace). We are on 3000 acres, and though most of it is farmland there is a huge amount of dried wood around.

G'day sillybgoat and welcome to the workshop!:2tsup::2tsup::2tsup:

Look in the carving forum. Plenty there to inspire and plenty of help to be had.

Wouldn't mention firewood with conditions the way they are in SA at present.
