Sometimes I think the working man is never meant to get ahead. I had a friend of mine with a small engineering business offer me 4 weeks of cash-in-hand work leading up to Christmas. Great I thought ~3 G's in the hand will see a very nice Christmas for the family. Took the car to the mechanics tonight as there was a rattle coming form the engine bay. Looks like I've done a big end bearing, minimum of $1200 prolly closer to $1700 depending on if the conrod overheated and distorted, plus the earliest I'll get the car back is Friday week :((. Bugga, in one hand, out the other.

Yep sucks.

Just when you think things are looking up something sneaks under your guard.

Yeah Jim, it affects you too as a fair share of the loot was earmarked for a Tormek, with turners kit as well.

Yeh, life is a bitch lik that :-

BTW I would have thought even $1700 was cheap to pull the big ends apart. Depends on car I guess.

I thought it was "One door closes and another one slams in your face". At least that's been my experience . . . :C

Still, better to have something coming in so that you can pay for something that needs to be done. It's much worse when there's a drought on and cost of living is there as it always has been.

You could sell the car (reduced value because of motor probs

Buy a pushbike for a couple of hundred - leaving change from car sale

That means you have more money for tools from Jim - like a tormek and a 250 stubby as well as keeping fit living longer to enjoy the new toys.

Just trying to help

yes, but riding a bike is fraught with danger, you can be killed or maimed at any time by maniacal P plate drivers.

What a bunch of pesimistic lot you are...............
GJ firstly your offered work you wouldn't have had extra cash to pay for repairs to said car. second your not paying tax so more in your pocket again.
lets hope ATO doesn't read this site

I would call it an outright windfall - you have the car covered and will still have cash-in-hand!

I finished the job for my friend and collected a tidy $2337.50 for 93.5 hrs work and picked the car up on Friday after 3 weeks at the mechanics. The bill came to $2334.75, and apparently I need 2 new tyres as well :oo:.

I know that the extra money gave me a chance to pay for the work done to the car, but at the time I was offered the work I had no idea that the car was "sick" and I was hoping to give the family a nice Christmas.

 You might be able to get some super glue from a $2 shop with that. Coffee cost more than that these days, unless you go to Maccers. You'll just have to take everyone for a nice drive for xmas. :D
