FInishing Brazillian Walnut

Hi guys,

i've almost finished a box i'm making with figured brazillian walnut, and have started thinking about how i would finish it. has anyone had any experience with this wood in particular?
i'm quite new to wood working so i'm not too sure about how to finish this project. i was after a simple high gloss finish that would really show off the figuring and the grain of the wood. i was looking at another thread where someone used 10 coats of wipe on poly and then buffed it to high gloss, which seemed achievable for me, but wasn't sure if this would be best for the wood i'm using.

would appreciate any suggestions!

Hi GonK,

If you have a Random Orbital Sander, you could try finishing with Scandinavian oil, using grits up to 2000 or beyond.
Typically I will sand 80, 100, 120, 150, 180, 240,400g dry, clean the piece with Turps, then saturate with oil and continue with 400, 800, 1200, 1500, 2000, 4000g wet. You will end up with a brilliant finish and after the oil dries (about 2-5 days) you can finish with Traditional Wax from UBeaut. Most excellent finish and smell good too.

will put ubeaut wax on the shopping list, and probably feast watson clear scandanavian oil?
did you have to use a sealer on the wood before the oil?

Hi gonK,

I use Wattyl Scandinavian oil, so I can't speak on whether the Feast Watson product will work or not.
If you are buying Traditional Wax, the I strongly suggest you get some EEE Ultrashine as well. This provides a very fine cutting action and gives a good base for the Trad wax. You might also want to look at getting a Swansdown Mop as well to give the final touch.
So, after sanding at the highest grit, wipe down the box with a clean cotton rag, then let the oil dry for a couple of days. Then apply the EEE and then the wax and finally after wiping the excess wax off, buff with the Swansdown mop. EEE and the mop are available from UBeaut.

got a can of wattyl scandanavian teak oil and am going to put an order through with ubeaut for some eee ultrashine and traditional wax!! will definately post my results!

hey rob, just a quick question.

i applied the wattyl scandanavian oil to a picture frame i've made out of brazillian walnut (came out amazing!) but i was wondering when would i know when it's dry? i.e. 2-5 days
as well as how much oil should i put on the wood? i applied it generously and sanded, it has a nice sheen to it currently, and when i put more oil and and leave it to soak, it all gets absorbed in about 20mins or so.

Hi gonK,

You should only apply the oil once to saturation, then sand. No further application of oil is necessary.
Give the oil 3 days to dry and you should be fine.
