I have to go to Melbourne for a few days for work, and I want to try and get out to your Carbatec store in Richmond while I'm there.
Other than the CBD, I don't know Melbourne at all and I'm wondering if it's easy to get to Richmond by public transport from where I'm staying. Which is a hotel opposite Albert Park.
So here's a chance for you Mexicans to tell me where to go :D
Thanks in advance

Carba-Tech is not too hard to get to from the city.
You will need to catch the tram in Flinders St ( I think it is No 70 to Wattle Park) that goes down between the MCG and Tennis Centre and along Swan St Richmond past Carba-Tech which will be 2 or 3 stops past Chapel St. If you get to Burnley St you have gone too far. Look out for a "Home" hardware store which will be on your left directly opposite Carba-Tech.
Hope this helps

Thanks Tom.
So I'd have to go into the CBD first?
I can't do it direct from my hotel in Queens Road?
I apologise if these are stupid questions but I'm geographically challenged when it comes to Melbourne :)

Prezactly.
Actually from Queens rd there are a few ways to get there including walking to punt rd across Fawkener Park, getting trams up toorak rd etc. The best idea is to get the reception at the hotel to direct you to the address. The way detailed above is the most fool proof.
Actually the best idea is to get your company to give you a cab-charge :)
Don't forget to pack a jumper, raincoat, windbreaker, shorts, sunscreen, sunglasses, t-shirt and thermal underwear. (for the first day) :) :)

Hi Craig
Unless you want a fairly long walk, then you will need to get into the CBD first, Melbourne only really supports travel in and out of the CBD. Get a tram into the city from St Kilda Rd (parallel to Queen's Road)
Once you're in the CBD, get a 70 Tram (as said before) or get a train to Burnley Station
A good interactive map of melbourne tarnsport is at:

Thank you one and all.
Seems pretty easy.
I'll let you know if I managed to do it without getting hopelessly lost. :D
Unfortunately Dave, the company will only spring for cabcharges to and from the airport :(
Cheers

Just to add confusion,
You can get a tram (72) up Commercial Rd, to Chapel St. Then tram (78 or 79) up Chapel St (becomes Church St) to Swan St, about half a block west of Carbatec. Into town is probably more straight forward.

This is a reference to the fact that Melbournians think that we have four seasons in a day. I've lived in Melbourne for 9 years and I can tell you that in July and August the only season you will get is winter.
As they say, "Sh!thouse one day, Crappy the next"
Grunt,
PS. After a while you get used to the cold, so much so I moved to Romsey. It snows here every now and again. Miss the white sand beach and the waves of Trigg.

Not much admitedly. :)
But I thought only the banana benders called us cockroaches :D
Mexican is a term of endearment, honest :)
Dan, I think I better stick to going into the city. The KISS principle usually works best for me :D

Geez Wayne, I don't want to walk it
After all, I'm trying to "sneak" this visit in between what I'm supposed to be doing. :D
Hope the employer doesn't know about this site

Craig,
Sorry, 4.7km is a bit much of a walk to sneek in I guess. However, 4.7km should not cost much in a cab me thinks.

Craig - Getting the #70 tram it will almost drop you at Carba Tec's front door.
You catch the tram in Batman Avenue (NOT FLINDERS ST). Batman Ave runs alongside the Yarra River, is between Princes Bridge and Flinders St, it runs off St Kilda Rd outside the station.
Cheers - Neil :)

Sorry Neil
Batman Ave does not exist there any more - it is now a park,
The tram now goes along Flinders St
Craig
I should have mentioned that if you buy a ZONE 1 ALL DAY FULL FARE Metcard for $5-00 you will be able use all the tram network and most of the train network for all day

Give me a bell when you are in town and if you are interested in a beer in my shed.
I will put the mortein out of sight if you find it offensive. :D

Could be an hours ride in Melbourne.
's pretty close to the money on that one. Heaps of trams on St Kilda road, probably one or two every couple of minutes going to the city. From here you could wait upto 20 minutes for a #70 Wattle Park one, which would take about 20 mintutes to get you to Carbatec. On the way back, allow twenty minutes wait for a tram back, 20 on the thing, and theres a couple of hours just in travel. Pay a couple of bucks for the cab and you would cut it down to about fifteen minutes each way. Oh yeah, also buy some sudafed, as no doubt you will get someone in the tram who looks like death and is sneezing their head off. I hate public transport.

Thanks for the tip about the Metcard Tom, I would have just bought singles
Wood Borer, Camberwell? I'm just getting my head around Richmond :D
Yeah a beer would be good if we can arrange it. I'll PM you my itinerary.

Craig,
We live about 50m from the tram line that takes you into the city (Flinders St) and about 2 minutes walk to the station that takes you into the city (Flinders St). Our house is 10Km East from the city.
Not that many power tools in my shed but a few hand planes and other hand tools plus plenty of cobwebs and shavings also examples of works in progress.

Actually, Eastie has offered me a lift, he reckons that he's happy to drink your beer. :D

Eastie is most welcome to drink my beer but I would be very careful driving with him - I won't say anything else because I don't want to further ruin his already tattered reputation :D
Eastie works in the city area and would probably drive almost past my place to get home so that would be a good arrangement.
I will PM Eastie with my details.
How does the Monday night sound?

Sorry about the bum steer. BLOODY MELBOURNE things keep changing. Every time I look there's something different even Collins & Bourke Sts which run parallel to each other about about 250 meters apart now intersect at a point where there used to be nothing but wasteland.
Guess I'd better stop handing out helpful info to unsuspecting tourists. You could end up anywhere.
Best thing to do is cop the free ride with Eastie, you could do a lot worse. He's a really nice bloke. Even if he is inclined to imbibe a little.
Cheers - Neil :)

Craig,
I have a bottle of Neil's hard shellac in the shed if we run out of beer, the use by date is still current, personally I don't like drinking it straight so I cut it with metho but Eastie ..... straight down the gullet.
So if you stop off at Carbatec make sure Eastie puts the shellac in the back of the car.

Borer,
I prefer my metho tepid, and I’ll only drink 100% IMS. I don’t like ice cubes as it waters it down and clouds the finish. Haymes make a nice drop http://www.ubeaut.biz/zonked.gif

That's OK Eastie,
You can hold the bottle above my gas heater in the shed to take the chill off it.
What bad manners we have though forgetting about our interstate visitor, how do you take your metho Craig?

Looks like the Victorian and NSW woodworkers are again in the lead, this time with interstate cooperation, tolerance, diplomacy and goodwill (sharing metho cocktail recipes in the shed).
A lot of catching up for the other states to be done especially those states who don't have daylight saving.

I gave you the wrong price for the all day ticket - it is $5-80. The machines on the trams take coins only or you can buy from many shops.
I am working on Monday or I would try to catch up with you
