I am working on a workbench (http://www.woodworkforums.com/showthread.php?t=76785) at the moment and am starting to consider the finishing aspects. The bench is made of various timbers of different colours (whatever was available). I would like to blend them if I can and am wondering what suggestions people may have. Ultimately it would be nice to have a dark coloured bench but not too dark, say an aged Redgum look.
Any suggestions?

Usually a pigment stain of some description, I find the Wattyl interior stain gives a reasonably good density across a good range of timbers. But you may need to try and even out the porosity (absorbancy) of your timbers wetting it out with a bit of turps or similar to achieve a fairly even color across them all.
From memory there is a jarrah, but traditional cedar would be my bet.

I have some cedar stain, thanks. I was talking to a guy on Friday who suggested pre-wetting the darker timber to reduce its absorbency. I'll give it a go on some test bits, it sounds like its worth a try.
