I'm after a dark chocolate stain ???

Any advice would be a help ... I'm looking for a dark chocolate brown stain to go on american oak , I've just tested walnut was to light n wrong colour then teak brown looked good in shop but came out a bit purple the brown in it tho was getting closer to the colour ... Nothing else looked even close to what i had in mind . Would i have to mix a few different colours together ? If so is the a receipe out there ?????? The brand of stain i'm using is Feast Watson Prooftint.

If you can find a reseller of Protec Paint in Sydney, have a look at their Dark Oak stain. It is a nice chocolate brown and is a much better wood stain than Feast Watson Prooftint.
Only problem is the smallest size they sell is 1ltr.

Hi Heymattwhat,

As you suggested you can experiment with combining different colours to create what you are looking for. I use a little black to darken things a bit and test on 4 x 3" scrap strips of the wood I'm using. The amount you sand and the smoothness of the raw timber can also impact the colour. Also a tip from a lesson learned the hard way, write down the amounts of the different colours you mix together. It's a pain after you finally crack the right colour or SHMBO picks one of your early mixes from last week and you've forgotten what's in it.

What TT said, I use walnut in Feast Watson/Wattyl with a bit of FW black proof tint and as TT says write down your mixtures.

Yeah cheers fellas , good ideas i did try mixing the walnut with the teak brown but again not that nice a colour .. I'll add some black n see how i go !! thanks again !

I had to mix a bit up today, 100ml walnut to 10ml black prooof tint. Might give you a starting point.

How fine are you sanding?
Walnut stain is about as brown you'll ever get... other than Bobs Mission brown.
You can mix in some black stain, it will give you a smokey brown, if you go to far(more black than brown)add some jarrah stain.
If you sand to fine(burnishing the surface)dark stains will not take evenly or go very dark, my last commission needed sanding to 240g by machine then finishing with 100g by hand!(dark chocolate... like Vegemite coloured bar:) )

I've sanded to 320g and was planning to go to 600g but if the stain won't take as well with such fine grade i'm not sure now, i guess i've got a lot testing to do before going ahead with the real thing. I bought black, jarrah and some colour reducer today so by the end of the weekend i should have the colour i'm after ! Thanks again 4 all yr advice as finishing is a bit of a training wheel thing 4 me.
